Gallbladder surgery, medically known as cholecystectomy, is a common surgical procedure performed to remove the gallbladder when it becomes diseased or develops gallstones. The gallbladder is a small organ located beneath the liver that stores bile, a digestive fluid that helps break down fats. When gallstones form, they can block bile ducts and cause severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and infection. In many cases, surgery is the most effective and permanent solution.

The most commonly performed method is laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, a minimally invasive procedure that uses small incisions and a tiny camera to remove the gallbladder. This technique offers several benefits, including less pain, minimal scarring, shorter hospital stay, and faster recovery. In certain complex cases, open surgery may be recommended for patient safety.

Before surgery, the surgeon evaluates the patient through physical examination, blood tests, ultrasound, or other imaging scans. After the procedure, most patients can return home within a day and resume normal activities within a week, following medical advice. Proper post-operative care and a balanced diet help ensure smooth recovery.

Gallbladder surgery is considered safe and highly effective when performed by an experienced surgeon. Early treatment prevents complications such as infection, pancreatitis, or bile duct obstruction, helping patients regain comfort and improve their overall digestive health.
